Here on our homestead we keep a small flock of BYM (Backyard Mix) hens along with a small flock of Silkies.

As we had a great interest in cold-hardy birds, which are well-suited to withstand harsh winter conditions and fluctuating temperatures, but also wanted to ensure a diverse selection of egg colors for both culinary variety and aesthetic appeal, we made the informed decision to settle on the BYM option for our main flock and egg producers. The BYM, or "Backyard Mix," is essentially a carefully curated mixture of two or more distinct chicken breeds that are kept together, or it can refer to the offspring resulting from the intentional breeding of these different breeds combined.
